What is Asphalt Resurfacing?
Asphalt resurfacing is the process of restoring an existing asphalt surface by removing and replacing the top layer. This can involve milling down a specified depth (such as 40–50mm) and installing a new lift of asphalt, or fully removing the surface layer and replacing it — often referred to as a “peel and pave.”
The goal of resurfacing is to extend the life of the pavement while correcting surface issues like cracking, rutting, and drainage problems without rebuilding the entire base.
What is an Asphalt Overlay?
An asphalt overlay involves placing a new layer of asphalt over the existing surface. In some cases, this can be done with minimal prep work such as cleaning and applying tack coat, while in others, light milling may be done around curbs, catch basins, or tie-in areas.
Overlays are typically used when the existing asphalt is structurally sound but showing surface wear.
Resurfacing vs Overlay – What’s the Difference?
While the terms are often used interchangeably in the industry, the key difference comes down to preparation and purpose.
- Resurfacing involves more prep work, such as milling or removing asphalt, and is used to correct grades, drainage, and surface failures
- Overlay is a faster, more cost-effective option when the existing surface is stable and doesn’t require major correction
In many cases, the right approach depends on the condition of the asphalt and how the surface is being used.
